  • Parental Preparation....why it's important! Parental Preparation....why it's important!

As with most of lifes important experiences, failing to prepare often means preparing to fail, and your childs 11-plus exam is no exception.  When looking to get a place in a selective school, your child may not yet fully understand the importance of the 11-plus exam or the necessity for exam practice, but with the right support, you as the parent are able to gently guide them in the right direction.

Selective school places are determined by the result of your childs 11-plus exam result, so if you are looking to get them into a grammar or independent private school as opposed to a comprehensive, taking the time to help them prepare to the best of their ability will be highly beneficial to them come exam week.

Whilst giving your child the right resources and support are both crucial, having you on hand to help them when they become stuck or stressed can be a real boost, and as such it is important that you are there with the answers.  On-going, at-home assessment of their learning helps the child to become confident in their ability to master the knowledge they are required to know and as such, StudyElevenPlus have a vast range of 11-plus practice books from some of the most trusted and experienced names in the business.  Practice papers and study guides are usually split into the following categories; English, Maths, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning and from the following top names in the industry:

    • Bond
    • Letts
    • UBP
    • CGP
    • Athey Educational
    • GL Assessment

As each school you are looking at may use a different assessment variation, it is helpful to know what examination you will need to prepare and study for so that your child is comfortable and able to recognise the exam style on the day.  For example, studying the CGP papers at home and then taking the exam in the Athey style may confuse them, so preparing in the right style will help to lower their stress levels on the day. In turn this will help ensure they can remain calm and complete the exam to the best of their ability without anxiety marring all the hard work they, and you, have put in together over the weeks and months leading up to it.

GL Assessment practice papers are designed to look exactly the same as the 11-plus exam they are studying for, but be sure to make sure that the school you are looking at follows this way...this is always KEY. As different schools work with different publishers and despite working very hard for years beforehand, if you're child is practicing on the wrong exam board it puts them at a HUGE disadvantage to the other children taking the exam. Recognising the lay out of the papers on the day and lowering any anxiety will enable them to feel comfortable and be at ease in the exam situation, which is crucial for success.

The Bond papers are created with nearly fifty years of 11-plus experience and as such they offer extensive and continuously updated practice papers, ideal for supporting your childsstudy.  Alongside their graded papers, which you and your child can use as a way to test their studying success prior to exams, there is a motivational progress chart to help encourage them along the way.

     -----------

Children aren't the only ones who require support during this potentially stress filled time.  Anxiety from concerned parents who are unsure if they are doing the best they can to support their child can rub off and jeopardise the necessary learning, and as such, using practice papers and parental guides available at StudyElevenPlus (or perhaps taking advantage of the free consultation with an 11-plus expert) can also help put your mind at ease too.  Knowing that you are using the right information and that you are in capable and experienced hands will really help you to remain calm and confident in your childsability, and this in turn will be reflected in them come exam time.

In fact, this element is so important to your childs success that some of these assessment packs come with a step-by-step guide for the parent to allow them to understand what is needed at every point along the way.

No doubt your childs happiness is the top priority, but of course their secondary education and getting into the best school is also important, and as such preparing them to succeed with the right knowledge and a relaxed yet competent attitude toward these all important exams from day one is the best possible way to ensure both of these factors are met.

  • When to start preparing... When to start preparing...

Preparing for the 11 plus exam takes a lot longer than many parents think. We have had a number of you contact us just weeks before your child is to take the exam asking for advice on which books should be purchased.

Which can sometimes be too late.

And no matter how well your child performs in school, the 11 plus exams require a completely different way of thinking. The exams require you to think in a different way to what you're used to and they test how fast you are and how quickly your mind grips certain concepts.

Starting as early as possible is the best way to train your mind on the 11 plus.

We do understand that sometimes its difficult to get a child to concentrate at such a young age, but even if they start with just one or two hours a week and build it up from there it will always be beneficial.

Now before we get an influx of comments saying that it's not always the case that a child who has only begun preparations a few months before the exam will not pass and continue on to the next level, but we do implore that the 11 plus entrance exams are extremely competitive- and the longer you wait to get your child working and preparing on the exams the bigger the gap between your child and some one who has been studying and preparing for years.
