Book 1 is ideal for children who are new to written comprehension and includes: simple contemporary texts with which they will readily identify, gripping tales that span the centuries from Aesop to Charles Kingsley and E. Nesbit to Dick King Smith, informative non-fiction reports covering diverse topics (for example the Viking history of York and the functions of different types of teeth), a playscript based on The Wizard of Oz and memorable poems (some of them funny) from well-loved writers such as Hilaire Belloc, Dylan Thomas and Wendy Cope
- Book 2 is for children whose reading skills are fluent and accurate and includes: excellent examples of broadsheet journalism (such as a description of the celebrations following England's victory in the 1966 World Cup), an instructional text 'How to make a wormery' that children will love, enthralling extracts from classic fiction -'The Adventures of Robin Hood' 'Treasure Island' and 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' plus stories based on the 'Canterbury Tales' and Arthurian legend, an intriguing playscript adapted from the Sherlock Holmes detective story and thought-provoking poetry from Charles Causley, Walter de la Mare, Valerie Bloom and Edward Thomas.
- Book 3 encourages children to move beyond simple understanding and recall to look for more complex meanings. It includes: adventure stories from Roald Dahl, Mark Twain, Anthony Buckeridge and Kenneth Grahame, an inspiring biography of Falklands soldier Simon Weston, further non-fiction from Jacqueline Wilson and Emmeline Pankhurst, evocative poems from some of the best British poets (such as Lewis Carroll, Robert Browning and R.L. Stevenson), an appealing letter written by Stevenson as a teenager and an introduction to the writing of J.R.R.
- Book 4 reflects the broadening interests and word power of young people who will soon move to secondary school, or have now done so. It includes: non-fiction texts covering the discovery in Russia of a long-extinct mammoth, shells and their origins and the life of explorer Robert Scott, the poignant 'last letter' from Scott to his widow, classic poetry from Rudyard Kipling, Edward Thomas, Edward Lear and William Wordsworth, a short extract from the play 'Hamlet' by William Shakespeare, riveting fiction from R.L. Stevenson, Thomas Hardy, Daniel Defoe and Charles Dickens and absorbing autobiographies and biographical fiction from Roald Dahl and Alison Prince.
- This Teacher's Guide provides you with all you need to use Key Stage 2 Comprehension to its full potential, including: full teaching notes for every text including an introduction and answers, further activities which may be adapted for individual or group work, at least one speaking and listening activity for each text, cross-curricular contents charts which also indicate the level of each text, a photocopiable group record sheet for each activity book and a handy summary of the comprehension objectives listed in the Primary Framework.
